SCRIPTURE EXCERPTS

James 3:2–12 …if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.

We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.

But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.

People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water? Does a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? No, and you can’t draw fresh water from a salty spring.

James 1:26 If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.

James 3:9–10 Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!

Proverbs 18:21 The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

Numbers 13:30 But Caleb tried to quiet the people as they stood before Moses. “Let’s go at once to take the land,” he said. “We can certainly conquer it!”

Numbers 13:31 But the other men who had explored the land with him disagreed. “We can’t go up against them! They are stronger than we are!”

Numbers 14:1–2 Then the whole community began weeping aloud, and they cried all night. Their voices rose in a great chorus of protest against Moses and Aaron. “If only we had died in Egypt, or even here in the wilderness!” they complained.

Numbers 14:28-30 So God replied: ‘As surely as I live, I will do to you the very things I heard you say. You will all drop dead in this wilderness! Because you complained against me, every one of you who is twenty years old or older and was included in the registration will die. You will not enter and occupy the land I swore to give you. The only exceptions will be Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Proverbs 12:18 Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.

Proverbs 16:24 Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.

Proverbs 15:23 Everyone enjoys a fitting reply; it is wonderful to say the right thing at the right time!

Proverbs 3:27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them.

Joshua 1:9 This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Ephesians 2:10 You are God’s masterpiece. He has created you anew in Christ Jesus, so you can do the good things he planned for you long ago.

James 1:19  Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

Consider:

What is God teaching me through these passages?

How can I apply these passages to my life?
